The Tobacco Company Restaurant offers a unique dining experience in the Historic Shockoe Slip district located in downtown Richmond, Virginia. Celebrating 32 years, The Tobacco Company is a one of a kind casual fine dining restaurant offering contemporary regional cuisine with an atmosphere of Victorian elegance. What was once an old abandoned tobacco warehouse is now a beautiful, fun and exciting four-story dining and entertaining palace. Complete with antique fixtures throughout, you’ll enjoy an exquisite meal with an unforgettable atmosphere.
The Tobacco Company is committed to value, excellence and the creation of a memorable dining experience. Their menu is known for custom cut meats and fresh seafood, and features a wide offering including signature dishes such as Certified Angus Beef Prime Rib with second servings offered “on the house”, She Crab Soup, and their famous Mary Martin Cheese Pie Dessert!
Live music in the lounge fills the atrium where guests check in at an old ticket booth which doubles as a hostess desk. The Tobacco Company Restaurant’s exclusive club has a separate entrance and is decorated with authentic stained glass, Victorian chandeliers, a turn of the century hand-carved oak bar with a state of the art sound system, and is recognized as one of the most popular dance clubs in Richmond.
The Tobacco Company’s History
Shockoe Slip was once the busy headquarters of tobacco and cotton barons who traded daily in the cobblestoned port below the falls of the James River. Tragically, this vital business district was reduced to rubble during the Civil War.
In the 1973, Jearald Cable saw the potential of Shockoe Slip as a major restaurant and retail district. Accordingly, he secured an option of two, three-story warehouses and proceeded to design what is now The Tobacco Company Restaurant. The interior’s focal point was to be a three-story atrium with an exposed antique elevator to carry guests from the first floor cocktail lounge to the dining floors above.
The eighteen-month restoration project happily resulted in a historically rich and beautiful landmark restaurant, where today, over 5,000 guests dine each week.
